What is rising damp?

A common misconception about rising damp is that it’s related somehow with plumbing fixtures like sinks being installed incorrectly. However, in most cases, rising damp is caused by a failure in the construction process. For example, a bridged damp proof course (DPC) or a missing DPC can allow water to rise up through your fabric and brick walls after absorption from surrounding ground-level surfaces occurred.

Generally, rising damp is first noticed by the damage it causes to building walls. Plaster and paint can become brittle or loose, while any wallpaper tends to crease and wrinkle due to the moisture build up. Tide marks may be visible where ground water reaches its highest level on the walls.
